Sudanese Prime Minister Kamil Idris has dissolved the country’s caretaker government, just one day after taking office, marking a significant shift in Sudan’s leadership.

Idris, the first prime minister since the 2021 military coup, was sworn in on Saturday, pledging to prioritize national security, stability, and reconstruction.

Since April 2023, Sudan has been engulfed in civil war, with violent clashes between the military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The conflict has resulted in at least 24,000 deaths, though estimates suggest the toll is far higher.

More than 14 million people have been displaced, including over 4 million who fled to neighboring countries. The war has been marked by mass atrocities, including ethnically motivated killings and sexual violence, particularly in Darfur, where famine has been declared in multiple locations.

In his first speech as prime minister, Idris urged countries supporting the RSF to cease “criminal operations” and vowed to serve Sudan with sincerity and dedication.

While no timeline has been given for appointing a new government, Idris’s move signals a potential political reorganization in Sudan’s fragile landscape.
